Report: Access To Grocery Stores Problem In Dallas
While this story may seem stale on the surface, I chose it because I remember when i first realized that being a child of Mexicans who grew up poor could be a hazard to my health.
I was in D.C. doubled over at Union Station. My mom was looking at me in concern, running down the quick options to make me feel better. She had been doing this for as long as I could remember.
A few days later I told an acquaintance about my symptoms. She said it sounded like cancer. Something told me I was cancer free… something else had to be a problem.
Years later I was in the hospital, channeling pain out of my body, listening to the woman next to me violently vomit. I guess they pair gastro-patients in the same rooms…
and then I took a sociology class and I learned about how food is culture.
The fact that red meat was a staple and vegetables were ketchup, potatoes and over cooked carrots/ broccoli drowning in melted American Kraft Cheese Singles contributed to the pain in my belly.
God bless my mother though, who readily admits that she can only cook five things, one of them being some kick ass Mexican Rice, potatoes and ground beef stew.
I thought about chi-cha-rones… how things taste great deep fried in manteqa. White flour tortillas…
On a side note, there were freshly chopped onions, tomatoes and green peppers.
Then I met Jim. He introduced things to my family like freshly-cooked vegetables with light marinades, wheat bread, salad, fish, meals WITHOUT carbs.
What we are taught growing up, the cheap food we have available and the quick-fix box meals contributed to the pain. It also contributes to clogged arteries, long personal moments in the bathroom and death.
And what the study in the story talks about is that part of the problem is not just about a lack of health food education.
In South Dallas — in the poor areas of Dallas — people don’t have ACCESS to the more healthy options like the fresh foods found at Central Market, Whole Foods or Eatzi’s.
I also chose this story because I’ve never considered what it’s like to NOT have access to Tom Thumb, Albertson’s AND two Super Targets.
Finally, I’m glad to report my only stomach problems now result from heavy alcohol use… which I’m also blaming on my family.
Happy to announce: Duncanville Club Back In The Swing Of Things
Say what you will about me, I’m cheering for the swingers. They worked with the City of Duncanville to reduce the number of people coming to the parties, they stopped taking ‘donations,’ and they will have off-site parking.
Why am I routing for sexual immorality?
Well, one of the women who went up against the city council said it best the first night:
“The government needs to stay out of our bedrooms.”
And the ever famous: The personal is political.
FDA: Chantix May Be Tied To Suicidal Behavior
For you smokers out there, I know things can seem desperate, but don’t be fooled into taking the miracle drug Chantix.
This is personally terrifying for me because two years ago, Jim almost took the drug.
This story was made big when a Dallas musician was shot in the head after banging on what he thought was his girl friend’s door. The man inside the apartment tried to fire a warning shot, but ended up shooting him in the head. His girl friend said he had just been physically violent with her — for the first time in their years of dating.
Those who knew Carter said he had been acting differently since he started taking the pill.
